Apple’s tech specs for the current Mac mini list two front USB-C ports with USB 3 at up to 10 Gb/s, and a headphone jack. The back has three Thunderbolt ports, HDMI, and Ethernet. On the M6 those back ports are Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 at up to 40 Gb/s. On the M5 Pro they are Thunderbolt 5 at up to 120 Gb/s, with USB 4 at up to 40 Gb/s. Apple’s guide says the front USB-C ports do not output video and that a Thunderbolt-only device belongs on the back. A dock host cable therefore goes in a rear port.

Use the CalDigit TS5 when the Mac mini is an M5 Pro. CalDigit lists one Thunderbolt 5 host port at up to 120 Gb/s, and three displays on an M5 Pro through the dock. The Mac mini has its own power supply, so the dock’s laptop charging rating plays no role here. CalDigit says the TS5 does not supply power over the Thunderbolt connection to a Mac mini.

Apple lists three Thunderbolt 5 ports on the M5 Pro mini at up to 120 Gb/s, and says it supports up to three external displays over a single Thunderbolt port. CalDigit lists three displays through the TS5 on an M5 Pro. The 120 Gb/s figure is the Thunderbolt 5 host mode with Bandwidth Boost, and the dock needs macOS 15 or later.

The TS5 also connects to a Thunderbolt 4 Mac mini. On the M6 the rear port runs at 40 Gb/s, so that host mode is the lower one. CalDigit’s list of tested Mac displays names the M1 to M5 families, so the M6 count follows Apple’s own line of up to two displays over a single Thunderbolt port. The mini needs no charging from the dock, and CalDigit says the TS5 gives a Mac mini no power over the Thunderbolt link.

  • Thunderbolt 5 host port with Bandwidth Boost up to 120 Gb/s
  • CalDigit lists Thunderbolt 4, USB4, and USB-C hosts as compatible
  • Host charge up to 140W from a 240W supply
  • The box includes a 1 m Thunderbolt 5 cable
  • Maximum function on CalDigit’s page wants Thunderbolt 5 or USB4 v2

Thunderbolt portsThree downstream, 40 Gb/s
Host chargeUp to 98W (20V at 4.9A)
Supply230W
AlsoDisplayPort 1.4, 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet, UHS-II SD and microSD

Apple lists the M6 rear ports as Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 at up to 40 Gb/s. The TS4 is a Thunderbolt 4 dock at 40 Gb/s with three downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports, so the dock link and the mini’s port are the same rate. CalDigit lists Thunderbolt 3, 4, 5, USB4, and USB-C hosts as compatible.

On an M5 Pro the rear port is Thunderbolt 5, and the TS4 stays at its own 40 Gb/s there. The front USB-C ports are USB 3 at 10 Gb/s and carry no video, so the dock cable uses a rear port. The 98W host charge is a laptop line. The Mac mini brings its own power.

  • Three Thunderbolt 4 ports at 40 Gb/s
  • CalDigit lists Thunderbolt 3, 4, 5, USB4, and USB-C hosts
  • A DisplayPort 1.4 output sits on the dock
  • UHS-II SD and microSD readers
  • Stays at 40 Gb/s on a Thunderbolt 5 port

Plugable lists the host link as Thunderbolt 4 at 40 Gbps and two HDMI 2.0 ports up to 4K at 60 Hz. Plugable says the dock works with Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 5, and USB4 hosts, and its Mac note names M5, M4, and the Pro and Max chips for two displays. The M6 is newer than that list. Apple’s own M6 line allows up to two displays over a single Thunderbolt port.

The mini also has its own HDMI port on the back. Apple lists one display up to 4K at 240 Hz through the mini, and a direct connection to the mini keeps that timing. The dock’s HDMI 2.0 ports top out at 4K 60 Hz, and its 100W host charge matches a laptop use case.

  • Works with Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 5, and USB4 hosts
  • Two HDMI ports for dual 4K at 60 Hz
  • A downstream Thunderbolt 4 port for drives and monitors
  • Plugable lists driverless operation

Buying Guide: the rear port rate on your Mac mini

The M6 rear ports are Thunderbolt 4 at 40 Gb/s. The M5 Pro rear ports are Thunderbolt 5 at up to 120 Gb/s, with USB 4 at up to 40 Gb/s. Two front USB-C ports on both are USB 3 at 10 Gb/s with no video. Plug a dock into a rear port.

The TS5 uses the full Thunderbolt 5 host mode on an M5 Pro. The TS4 and TBT4-UD5 are 40 Gbps docks. The Mac mini has its own supply, so the dock host-charge numbers of 98W, 100W, and 140W are laptop figures.
